The most common type of paste preparation you may give by mouth at home is a hairball remedy. These are sticky, and designed to be palatable. Compared to pills, they are tough to spit out or drop out of the mouth. Like peanut buter, they stick to the roof of the mouth!
Follow the general guidelines for giving tablets and liquids (see links to the right), but place the material on the roof of the mouth instead of at the back or side of the mouth.
As with giving any other medications, have your veterinarian demonstrate the technique best suited to you cat before you begin.
If there is risk of bite or scratch, make sure you know about some of the tips and tricks we can use to prevent these injuries.
A soft towel wrapped around Kitty, or a capable assistant can (alone or together) help to make this a safer, easier procedure!
